For a film like this, violence is the answer, or should have been. D'amato is unusually thin-skinned about laying on the gore.

There are a couple of choice bits, but nothing spectacular. If it weren't bad enough that the zombies don't do a whole hell of a lot, it's worse that they take forever to finally start reeking havoc.

I suppose the intention was to build suspense, but with a film like this what's the point. So how well is it made then?

For a film supposedly occurring mostly at night it is readily apparent that most all of the movie was shot during then day then given the day-for-night treatment.

The dubbing is dubious and the limited effects some what suspect. A mid-range rating for a bad movie that will undoubtedly find a niche audience; you know who you are.

An American businessman wants to build a hotel on a remote island, so he has someone sail him and his girlfriend there to check it out.

The zombie scenes seem tacked on as an afterthought, so as a horror film this doesn't really work that well. However due to the ridiculous dialog and the hardcore sex scenes the film MIGHT be worth it for drunken party type viewing, but even that is stretching it pardon the pun Feel free to skip this one, as it's only remote interesting as a curiosity.

The sleaze contained in this movie is far from being enough to match a real porno feature, but is sufficent to make the viewer smile.

Since the only existing print is in italian, I didn't get the whole story, but I sure laughed to death when I first saw the guy with the huge penis.

D'Amato is very daring to mix porno and horror like this. It could have frightened or disgusted porno lovers, and it could have shocked horror fans, but since I am both I really enjoyed the movie.

At first, I didn't believe the "monster" would rape his "victims" for real, but the "appendice" is real, and he even chokes a girl to death with it!

Definitly a movie you have to see if you like trashy horror. The moments where George Eastman appears are just hilarious.

They should have listened to all the rumors because zombies are there waiting. This is an extremely weird and bizarre film because the producer's wanted two films made.

One a porno and another a horror film so the director just combined the two elements. Running at nearly two hours this thing goes on for way too long, which is why I wish the hardcore sex scenes would have been removed.

There's a "soft" version out there that I keep meaning to see because I'm sure I'd like the film better minus the sex scenes. The zombie footage on the other hand is wonderfully done with a lot of great atmosphere and gore.

D'Amato was a master behind the camera and the cinematography here is terrific as is the music score.

For years I had been wanting to check this version out because I felt that the hardcore scenes in the uncut version were all rather ugly and did nothing erotic and instead they just dragged the film down.

It was interesting watching the film without the porn scenes because you realize that the Joe D'Amato film has more problems than just the porn stuff.

For starters, even without the hardcore sex there's way too many softcore scenes that are also not erotic. I was really surprised to see how silly the majority of the scenes are because it's clear that the main intent was just to show sex.

Another major problem with the picture is that it just takes them way too long to finally get to the island where the zombie stuff happens.

The zombies, as great as they are, are pretty much wasted because outside a couple scenes early on, the majority of their screen time happens at the very end of the movie.

It's really a shame that they weren't given more screen time because I felt the horror elements were quite strong and they keep the movie interesting.

Even though he was unable to make anything erotic, D'Amato did do a good job building up a rather bizarre atmosphere.

This version clocks in at minutes, which means it is missing twelve minutes worth of hardcore scenes. So, is this version better? I would say that it is simply because it's shorter and as I said, the hardcore scenes were rather ugly and added nothing to the picture.

Anyone who has seen Porno Holocaust will know exactly what to expect from Erotic Nights of the Living Dead, as the two films feature basically the same cast and plot lines.

Last time I checked, the living dead aren't sexy and mixing an average zombie film with a load of porn isn't exactly a guaranteed recipe for success.

As mentioned, the plot is basically the same as the one in Porno Holocaust and focuses on an isolated island. A group of sex starved or not people travel to the island for some reason or another, but naturally the island is infested with zombies.

This doesn't stop the travellers having sex with each other every five minutes, the zombies do prove to be a bit of a nuisance.

That's about the long and short of the plot really This film is slightly better than Porno Holocaust, but only slightly. The two films suffer from the same main problems: Erotic Nights of the Living Dead is also far too long, and it takes too long for anything to happen too.

The sex is mostly quite boring too, which obviously does the film no favours. The film features two of exploitation cinema's biggest stars in George Eastman also the writer and Laura Gemser.

Gemser, however, doesn't turn up until we get over the halfway point. There's a fair bit of gore in the film, some of it quite hardcore, but it's clear that the sex is the main focus.

The zombies themselves are the typical Italian style crusty looking things; not very convincing! As mentioned, the film is far too long and the plot really drags on numerous occasions, which is a shame.

There really isn't much to this film; it's very much what you'd expect, so if you're looking for something substantial then look elsewhere!

I can't really say that I found Erotic Nights of the Living Dead all that enjoyable so I won't be recommending it, but I guess some sleaze fans may get a kick out of it.

Taking along companion Fiona, Dirce Funari they seem initially weary of the journey due to local legends about a race of zombies controlled by an evil cat creature, they land on the island and find that it would make an excellent high-end resort.

Even though warned away from the place by local Luna, Laura Gemser they decide to stay there and use the island for their original intent.

Despite more warnings, a horde of the living dead arise from the grounds and stalk them through the island, forcing them to realize the reason for the zombie rampage and set out to stop it before they all become prey to the shuffling creatures.

The Good News: This one had some rather good qualities to it when it tried to. The biggest plus to it is the fact that there's some rather good stuff to come from the film's inclusion of hardcore porn into the zombie film genre.

Along with the usual Euro-sleaze standard of showing off full nudity from the females involved, this one goes the extra mile and uses it to insert male nudity into the mix with a variety of different options.

The main one is a full-on, extended and extremely graphic threesome that starts off with an explicit shower scene, then moves on into the hardcore sex scene that includes oral, penetration and more.

That it goes so far in presenting everything makes it standout, and the other sex scenes presented throughout aren't as bad either. These are also packed into the beginning of the film, giving this part of the film a sleazy taste that, along with copious amounts of nudity from non-sexual encounters presented, leave a really sleazy feel to these scenes.

Most of them fail, though, when compared to a bottle trick accompanied by a stripper's stage show that is easily one of the most dirty and disgusting scenes imaginable for these films.

Even a lesbian romp, kept to a soft-core focus due to the extremity of the previous entries, is a delight and somewhat fun.

The zombie footage mixed in, what little there is, is also really nice and manages to get a creepy feeling or two from the scenes, as it comes with the grossly-designed, long-dead and rotting look that really sums up the term zombie in great order, looking quite unique and really great.

The scenes of them emerging out of the sand is a sight to behold, with the heaving earth giving way to the creatures in a long, extended sequence that gives the chills, and the resulting action scenes provide plenty of life to the film.

The last plus is the moody cinematography on display, giving the island scenes a really beautiful look and the cemetery scenes an eerie air that sets up what's to come nicely.

These here are what help the film along. The Bad News: This one here did have a few problems with it. One of the biggest here is the simple fact of the inclusion of so much hardcore footage into the film.

This is the kind of stuff that can appear to turn off or morally offend the more prudish out there that merely want to see zombies ripping corpses apart and have no desire to see such kind of scenes.

The fact that it goes into the hardcore realm with it's sex and nudity, even so much as doing it often as well, is going to be a struggle for those with these values, plus it also manages to bring up the film's other big problem in that, the inclusion of all that footage results in the film just dragging out for no reason.

This is easily a good half-hour too long, most of which is the hardcore footage boosting the length as the film stops in it's tracks and indulges in them for no purpose other than it can, forcing everything else to come after it and making it feel way too long.

That also affects the zombie scenes in here, as they're rarely given any screen time other than the very end, which is a sad fact that they're reduced to a cameo role in their own movie.

The last flaw in here is the rather unusual manner of the ghost inserted into the film, which has very little sense to it and is overall sloppily done.

These here are the film's problems. The Final Verdict: A weird conundrum, as it mixes together the extremes of everything yet not really doing much with them.

This one could be worthwhile if you've got a strong stomach and don't mind over-bearing amounts of Euro-sleaze or fans of zombie films, but those with prudish values are advised to seek out a censored version or ignore altogether.

I'm interested in genre mixing. Its a common thing, especially with various humor components. The gore branch of horror and the porn branch of the sex film try to be mixed here.

I say gore rather than zombies because though zombies appear, the form is not that of a zombie flick. The gore and porn parts are okay I guess, except in the porn department these really are much nicer looking women than usual.

This comment is on the minute version which seems to be more complete than other 'uncut' versions. It seemed pretty explicit to me except for anything involving the native girl.

The mood, especially with the score, is effective. But the pacing is a killer. Here's the real problem: the sex stuff and the horror parts of the plot have nothing to do with each other.

Very few films mix the erotic and frightening. The only one I can recall is Kinski's 'Cat People. Ted's Evaluation -- 1 of 3: You can find something better to do with this part of your life.

This movie has divided fans of Joe D'Amato, horror, zombies and sexploitation for decades now, and there's good reason for it.

The first part of the film is a straight up porno film indicative of almost all Europorn of its day. The latter part is a tepid horror film about the resurrection of the living dead on a tropical island, and even creates a further rift among horror aficionados and zombie freaks about whether the island's inhabitants are just garden variety plain old undead or the upper elitist echelon, the zombie nation zombie fans take their zombie worship very seriously, I might add.

And, in between, there's just your average, standard travelogue exploitation we've seen hundreds of times before.

There's no set up, no introductory plot, just bad music, bad acting, bad editing and lots of 'coitus interuptus', as none of the sex is finished - in the middle of each scene, the scissor edits kick in, and we're whisked away to someplace we didn't wish to be It uses most of the same cast and scenery locations from a similar film of D'Amato's, 'Porno Holocaust', which was filmed at or around the same time, which I think I preferred to this one - 'can't be sure 'till I suffer through it again I'm a closet cine-masochist, I guess.

As far as Laura Gemser goes, aside from a brief glimpse of her 35 minutes into the film, we don't get to see her form or hear her speak till 50 minutes into the island undead saga, so she shouldn't be billed as the star of this flick.

She barely gets any screen time, and unveils herself to us only once that I can remember, so it's a total disappointment there.

Huge bummer So what we're left with is yet another flick D'Amato didn't have his heart or head in, a movie that can't decide whether it wants to be a horror flick or a sexploitation-porn film, and ultimately ends up as not much of either.

It might just kill ya Vampires have often been portrayed as seductive and sexy. Even werewolves are getting their day in the romance novels.

But erotic zombies? Not really. The zombies here are not portrayed in any erotic manner, other than Laura Gemser lending her presence to the scene.

Instead, the uncensored sex is provided by a hotel executive scouting a location to build a hotel. For some unknown reason he has chosen a remote island that seems to be completely covered in burial grounds.

Laura Gemser is on the side of the interned. So what happens when capitalism tries to clash with the dead and buried? The dead become restless.

What follows is rather typical of the low budget zombie films. The island becomes overrun with hundreds of zombies pushing up through the dirt to take their revenge on the living.

The film could have used a little more plot to tie it together so we would know why the site was picked, that the developers knew about the graves but disregarded them, etc.

What we do wind up with is the sexy Laura Gemser, a bit of explicit sex, and lots of walking corpses.

Actually, not so bad for a low-budget zombie film. If you are of fan of the low-budget zombie genre you know who you are then you will probably get a kick out of this film.

If you are interested in seeing a hardcore epic that happens to include zombies, then you will be disappointed by the brief, though explicit, footage.

Even after reading the reviews of this film, I still thought I would give it a try, since I'm a big zombie movie fan. Basically, it is at least half porno.

Not like mild nudity, but actual cheesy porno, with oral and lesbian scenes and everything. I had to fast forward a good chunk of the movie.

The refugees listen to radio and television reports of a wave of mass murders being committed across the east coast of the United States by an army of cannibalistic, reanimating corpses, and posses of armed men patrolling the countryside to kill the ghouls.

Ben devises a plan to obtain medical supplies for Karen and transport the group to a rescue center by refueling his truck.

Ben, Tom, and Judy drive to a nearby gas pump, holding the ghouls off with torches and Molotov cocktails. However, the gas from the pump spills and causes the truck to catch fire and explode, killing Tom and Judy.

Ben fights off the ghouls and runs back to the house on his own, and has to break down the door when Harry does not let him back in.

Ben beats Harry for his cowardice. While the ghouls feast on the remains of Tom and Judy, the remaining survivors attempt to find a way out.

However, the ghouls break through the barricades. In the ensuing chaos, Harry is shot by Ben, Karen dies from her injuries, reanimates, and begins to eat her father, Helen dies in the cellar after Karen stabs her with a masonry trowel , and Barbra recovers from her catatonic state and tries to help Ben keep the ghouls out, but is dragged away by her reanimated brother and the other ghouls when they break through the door.

Ben takes refuge in the cellar, where he has to shoot Harry and Helen's reanimated bodies as the ghouls break in upstairs. The next morning, Ben hears sirens and the approaching posse outside and emerges from the cellar, but is shot and killed when they mistake him for a ghoul.

His body is thrown onto a bonfire and burned with the rest of the ghouls. Romero embarked upon his career in the film industry while attending Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

The trio grew bored making commercials and wanted to film a horror movie during this period. They wanted to capitalize on the film industry's "thirst for the bizarre", according to Romero.

They pitched their idea for a then-untitled horror film. Co-written as a horror comedy by John Russo and George A. Romero under the title Monster Flick , [23] an early screenplay draft concerned the exploits of adolescent aliens who visit Earth and befriend human teenagers.

A second version of the script featured a young man who runs away from home and discovers rotting human corpses that aliens use for food scattered across a meadow.

Russo came up with the concept that they would be the recently dead only, because they could not afford to bring long-dead people out of their graves.

He also came up with the idea that they would be "flesh-eaters". The final draft, written mainly by Russo during three days in , focused on reanimated human corpses — Romero refers to them as ghouls — that consume the flesh of the living.

Romero drew inspiration from Richard Matheson 's I Am Legend , a horror novel about a plague that ravages a futuristic Los Angeles. The infected in I Am Legend become vampire -like creatures and prey on the uninfected.

I thought I Am Legend was about revolution. I said if you're going to do something about revolution, you should start at the beginning.

I mean, Richard starts his book with one man left; everybody in the world has become a vampire. I said we got to start at the beginning and tweak it up a little bit.

I couldn't use vampires because he did, so I wanted something that would be an earth-shaking change.

Something that was forever, something that was really at the heart of it. I said, so what if the dead stop staying dead? And the stories are about how people respond or fail to respond to this.

That's really all [the zombies] ever represented to me. There's this global change and there's one guy holding out saying, wait a minute, I'm still a human.

He's wrong. Go ahead. Join them. You'll live forever! In a certain sense he's wrong but on the other hand, you've got to respect him for taking that position.

Matheson was not impressed by Romero's interpretation, feeling that "It was I don't harbor any animosity toward him.

Russo and Romero revised the screenplay while filming. Karl Hardman attributed the edits to lead actor Duane Jones:.

The script had been written with the character Ben as a rather simple truck driver. Duane Jones was a very well educated man [and he] simply refused to do the role as it was written.

As I recall, I believe that Duane himself upgraded his own dialogue to reflect how he felt the character should present himself.

Eastman modified cellar scenes featuring dialogue between Helen and Harry Cooper. She told an interviewer, "I don't know if there was an actual working script!

We would go over what basically had to be done, then just did it the way we each felt it should be done". The sequence where Ben is breaking up the table to block the entrance and I'm on the couch and start telling him the story of what happened [to Johnny] it's all ad-libbed.

Although the film is regarded as one of the launching pads for the modern zombie movie, the screenplay itself never uses the word.

The lead role was originally written for someone of Caucasian descent, but upon casting African-American actor Duane Jones, Romero intentionally did not alter the script to reflect this.

The small budget dictated much of the production process. According to Hardman, "We knew that we could not raise enough money to shoot a film on a par with the classic horror films with which we had all grown up.

The best that we could do was to place our cast in a remote spot and then bring the horror to be visited on them in that spot".

The outdoor, indoor downstairs and basement scenes were filmed at a location northeast of Evans City, near a park. The basement door external view shown in the film was cut into a wall by the production team and led nowhere.

As this house was scheduled for demolition, damage during filming was permitted. The site is now a turf farm. Props and special effects were fairly simple and limited by the budget.

The blood, for example, was Bosco Chocolate Syrup drizzled over cast members' bodies. Costumes consisted of second-hand clothing from cast members and Goodwill.

Zombie makeup varied during the film. Initially, makeup was limited to white skin with blackened eyes; but as filming progressed, mortician's wax was used to simulate wounds and decaying flesh.

As filming was not linear, the piebald faces appear sporadically. Eastman supervised the special effects, wardrobe and makeup. The completed film ultimately benefited from the decision, as film historian Joseph Maddrey describes the black-and-white filming as " guerrilla-style ", resembling "the unflinching authority of a wartime newsreel ".

Maddrey adds, it "seem[s] as much like a documentary on the loss of social stability as an exploitation film ". Night of the Living Dead was the first feature-length film directed by George A.

Stephen Paul Miller, for instance, witnessed "a revival of fifties schlock shock Miller admits that " Night of the Living Dead takes greater relish in mocking these military operations through the general's pompous demeanor" and the government's inability to source the zombie epidemic or protect the citizenry.

While some critics dismissed Romero's film because of the graphic scenes, writer R. Dillard claimed that the "open-eyed detailing" of taboo heightened the film's success.

He asks, "What girl has not, at one time or another, wished to kill her mother? And Karen, in the film, offers a particularly vivid opportunity to commit the forbidden deed vicariously.

Although zombie cannibals were inspired by Matheson's I Am Legend , film historian Robin Wood sees the flesh-eating scenes of Night of the Living Dead as a lates critique of American capitalism.

Wood asserts that the zombies represent capitalists, and "cannibalism represents the ultimate in possessiveness, hence the logical end of human relations under capitalism".

He argues that the zombies' victims symbolized the repression of " the Other " in bourgeois American society, namely activists in the civil rights movement , feminists , homosexuals, and counterculturalists in general.
